Incredibly Blackboard Inc has filed another patent suit, this time against iParadigms LLC (the maker of Turnitin software). The documents are not yet publicly available so we can only speculate at this point about the complaint.
Some of us suggested early on that the patent's overly broad scope might allow Blackboard to assert its patent claim not only against its direct competitors in the learning management system space, such as Desire2Learn, but also embolden it to seek royalties from complementary products that integrate with the Blackboard system or Blackboard's competitors. Is this what's happening here? We will soon find out.
