Another Bogus Educational Software Patent

Another patent litigation in the educational software space.

Digital-Vending Services International, LLC (Washington, DC) has filed a patent lawsuit against 5 for-profit educational companies: University of Phoenix, Inc, The Apollo Group, Inc., Capella Education Company, Laureate Education, Inc., and Walden University, Inc. The patent was filed guess where? Texas Eastern District Court. The patent at issue is called: "Computer architecture for managing courseware in a shared use operating environment."

I haven't read the patent filing carefully but this is another bogus patent even more ridiculous than the Blackboard patent.  Here's a first translation of the patent in Plain English. I will provide a more precise rendering later.

"You have some computers on the Internet trying to access shared resources. We came up with the idea of having a "registration manager" that keeps track of which resources are being shared and how. Examples of what the registration manager does: a) accepts a 'registration containing a user's email address; b) accepts 'a registration containing a user's credit card information as billing or payment information.'; c)  presents a user with a menu or a schedule of courseware presentation events.'" WTF

I wonder if they will sue Blackboard for violating their patent?
